Graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies- University of London, with an Honours Degree in Chinese Language (Mandarin). He worked for many years as an art dealer in London and Hong Kong, specialising in early Chinese works of art. He also led tours to China as a guide and specialist lecturer. He has a particular interest in pre-Han Dynasty art and archaeology and in early Buddhist sculpture.

His fascination of Chinese culture led him to commence training in Tai-Chi & Qigong at the Academy of Eastern Arts where he still practices today. James has recently been involved in setting up and teaching introductory courses in Chinese culture and language at the Green School for Girls in Isleworth and additionally, offers short courses in Chinese language in conjunction with the Academy of Eastern Arts.
